Psalm 46 contains a number of wonderful promise that give us comfort, courage and strength to meet challenges we face in life. Notice I didn’t say when we face challenges, because part of our lives involve times of testing and various challenges. It is a given!

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” God is place we can find rest for our souls, a place of safety from sadness and grief and a place to get strong again. God as our refuge will never fail us.

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.” In God’s Kingdom there is everlasting joy that nothing can take away from us. Sometimes we need to pause and remember that God’s joy is deeper than our happiness. Pray often the words of Psalm 51, “restore to me the joy of thy salvation.”

“Come behold the works of the Lord.” God promises that the day will come when peace and justice will reign eternally. A day when violence will be banished forever. Look forward to God’s day of perfect judgment.

Now we finally read the key to this Psalm: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Take a breath my friends. Slow down. Stop all the frenzied activity and remember God is King. Rest and receive God’s love and mercy!
